IGP tasks new police recruits on community policing.

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has tasked the 10, 000 constables newly recruited into the police on community policing.

Egbetokun gave the charge at the passing out parade of the recruits who are of the 2022 batch.

The police boss, whose address was read by Kwara Commissioner of Police Victor Olaiya at the police training school in Ilorin where 587 of the recruits from Kwara and Kogi states passed out, said the recruits are being posted to their localities to promote effective community policing.

Egbetokun said the posting is a strategy that will ensure the local knowledge of the recruits is leveraged to address peculiar security challenges in their areas.

He however charged the constables to be of good character, disciplined and committed to the ethical standards of the police.

He stated: “Your postings will reflect the diversity of our nation as you return to your respective communities to foster the objectives of community policing.

“This strategy ensures that your local knowledge will be leveraged to address peculiar security challenges in your areas, ultimately strengthening ties between the police and the communities we serve

“I must, however, sound a note of caution: the cornerstone of a successful policing career is discipline. Your journey from here will depend on your character, commitment and adherence to the ethical standards of the Nigeria Police Force. Under my watch, there will be no tolerance for indiscipline, corruption or any form of misconduct.”

The police chief urged people of the country to cooperate with the police on the community policing project to make the country more secure.

“To the citizens of our beloved country, I assure you that these recruits represent the future of a reformed, motivated and community-driven police force. Together, let us work towards creating a safer, more secure Nigeria for all,” he stated.

Egbetokun commended the federal government on the recruitment policy as he described it as a critical factor in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of policing in the country.

“This ceremony is yet another milestone in the ongoing commitment of the Federal Government to strengthen the Nigeria Police Force. By recruiting and training new personnel annually, the government continues to address the longstanding manpower deficit within the Force, a critical factor in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of policing in Nigeria.

“The recruitment and training of 10,000 police recruits reflect our collective resolve to prioritise the security of lives and property across the country. This initiative aligns with our drive to not only fill manpower gaps but also tackle unemployment by providing opportunities for young Nigerians to contribute meaningfully to nation-building.

“As you graduate today, you are joining a reformed Police Force that is undergoing a transformation driven by professionalism, ethics, technological advancement. Under my leadership, the Nigeria Police and Force is focused on adopting innovative strategies to combat crime, ensure the safety of citizens and strengthen public trust.

“Let me emphasize that the uniform you wear is not merely a symbol of authority; it is a representation of service, sacrifice, and responsibility. You must uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and professionalism as you discharge your duties. Your conduct, both on and off duty, will define how the public perceives the Force.

“I must also highlight that the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the welfare and operational capabilities of the Force is unwavering. Through the Ministry of Police Affairs, the Police Trust Fund and other strategic partnerships, resources are being provided to enhance operational efficiency and personnel welfare. This is testament to the belief that a well-motivated and well-equipped police force is essential for national security,” he stated.
